Summary of New Atlantis

The novel “The New Atlantis” was written by Sir Francis Bacon in about 1623. This was a utopian novel that portrayed a vision of the future of human discovery and knowledge. The book starts out with this European crew that’s sailing from Peru to the south sea. While on their voyage they get lost and come across this island and decide to check it out. In this point of the novel, Bacon introduces a mythical island, Bensalem, which is far advanced in the scientific and technological world. The inhabitants are expressed as generous and delighting, welcoming any to their land. The most important structure on Bensalem is Solomon’s house. This is an institution that undertook all the sciences and technology. Plenty of researches in the applied and pure sciences are done in this institution that would only better humankind like new medicines, ideas for technology, and so on. I think Sir Francis Bacon write this novel because he wanted to express what he might have been thinking at this time about the sciences and technology. He had predicted things that have already happened in today’s world. Sometimes when you have such creative thoughts it’s good to express through writing, maybe he wasn’t even trying to predict anything. So in my opinion, he’s expressing what could be how the future in science and technology will advance, or creatively speaking it could have been just a thought of nonsense. Because at that time nobody thought such things were possible.
