The book of Isaiah

The book of Isaiah was written between 740-668 B.C. The book title translates to “The book of salvation”, Isaiah meaning salvation. The first part of Isaiah was written by Isaiah son of Amoz. However it is believed he did not write the whole book. The second part of the book had differed in style of work from the first part, and was written by an anonymous author. This author is referred to as second Isaiah, to distinguish between the two. The purpose of this book was to get the people to believe in God and to recognize that he is their salvation and only God, in addition to reading the prophecies of Isaiah in which some are coming true to this day.

This was the first book to contain writings of the prophets of the bible. As a prophet of God, Isaiah’s main duty was to urge the people to turn away from their sins and return to God.  He had warned the people if they hadn’t repented, God would punish them and so he did. However, Isaiah had also spoken of how God would take care of them, showing his more compassionate side. If they had followed God, he promised never to abandon them and will reward them with crops, land, vineyards, etc.  Isaiah’s words were directed to the nation of Judah and the people of Jerusalem. In addition to spreading the word of God, Isaiah had told many prophecies. He had foretold the coming of the Messiah and that he would be born from a virgin. He also predicted things that would happen in the near and distant future. The message of Isaiah is that God is salvation not man. God alone is the only savior.

  1. i like how straights and to the point the second paragraph was.
i feel like you captured gods "not so happy" side pretty well but im not seeing a lot of his compassionate/giving side. throwing a little of that in there might be good :)

  2. This is pretty informative. I don't have much to add, I think Ivana hit on the the only real thing missing. You might also mention the monotheism in further detail? You explain that God the only savior, but maybe you could add that people were following false idols as well.

  3. Overall, the summary was well written. The flow is very organized and straightforward. The only thing I might change is maybe divide the second paragraph into two? one about the wrath of God and the other one is the Loving of God. It just a suggestion because as a reader, it was two opposite ideas next to each other was a little distracting. Just an idea! :]

  4. I liked this summary, it really mixed both the background of Isaiah and the content of the book itself. I do feel like maybe discussing the "anonymous" author wasn't necessarily an official statement and rather a theory that scholars have about the book. I love how you mentioned that Isaiah's prophecies are still coming true today! :D

  5. I would argue that much of the first paragraph about the theories about the author(s) is not necessary in a summary. Such is more appropriate for a critical analysis than a summary. Otherwise, good.
